WoW Forever October 16 Beta Update: Class, Totem and Talent Changes

The October 16 WoW Forever beta update changes several core class and group-play assumptions. Here's a source-checked guide to the adjustments that matter for questing, dungeon groups and talent planning, with an explicit distinction between confirmed rules and temporary beta behavior.

What changed in the October 16 beta build?

Blizzard's latest developer note is a broad balance and systems revision rather than a general increase to leveling speed. It affects the behavior of class abilities, racial bonuses, some quest objectives and the Cooldown Manager. All rules here describe the active beta build, not guaranteed launch values.

Class changes players should retest

ClassConfirmed changePractical consequence
DruidWrath base damage increased by about 50%; Rejuvenation, Tranquility and Wild Growth can now critically heal. Feral Mangle becomes Primal Bite.Recheck low-level caster quest routes and talent tooltips; older Feral build descriptions use the wrong ability name.
HunterFurious Howl's attack-power bonus reduced 40%; Sonic Blast now available to Bat pets; Tame Beast rejects targets above the hunter's level.Do not base a pet choice on a pre-patch damage comparison or an inaccessible tame target.
MageArcane Missiles checks line of sight only when the channel begins; Wake of Fire lasts 30 rather than 20 seconds; Hot Streak lasts 20 rather than 15 seconds.Adjust PvE movement tests and Fire leveling recovery assumptions.
PaladinHoly Strike ranks scale differently; Holy Strike cooldown becomes 10 seconds and Improved Holy Strike is removed from the tree. Several Retribution talents change.Re-evaluate talent allocation before following old Holy or Retribution build images.
ShamanFlametongue, Windfury and Grace of Air totem stacking rules change; Elemental Fury and Elemental Alacrity exchange rows.Coordinate one buff setup per group; do not assume buffs from different shamans always stack.
WarriorSunder Armor threat was corrected; Focused Rage and Bastion exchange rows; Bloodthrill's proc chance rises.Tank threat testing and early Protection talent builds need a fresh comparison.

Totem stacking: the most important group-play correction

Flametongue Totem no longer stacks with Flametongue Weapon or Windfury Totem. Tranquil Air Totem, Windfury Totem and Grace of Air Totem also no longer stack, even when provided by different shamans in the group. These explicit rules supersede advice that simply recommends casting every available buff. Before a dungeon or raid, decide which buff is most useful for the party and verify the current combat tooltip. The official note also removes the ability to stack Flametongue by recasting it repeatedly.

Other changes: racials, items and quests

Gnome Eureka! now provides a 10% discount on Mana, Rage or Energy ability costs, replacing earlier configurations. Tauren Cultivation requires an appropriate character level relative to herb skill, and Touch of the Grave was adjusted so non-damaging abilities do not unexpectedly break crowd control. Blizzard also clarified Wizard Oil bonuses: Minor Wizard Oil 8 spell power, Lesser 16 and Wizard Oil 24; crafted wands no longer gain additional damage from the user's spell damage. Quest fixes address Dalaran, Westfall, Elwynn Forest, Zephras Isle and other zones. None of these adjustments should be mistaken for new zone launch dates.

Cooldown Manager and known issues

The Cooldown Manager remains an in-development feature. The note describes testing for Druid, Mage, Priest, Warrior and Warlock; spell ranks, pet cooldowns, Arcane Blast and some other interactions are not fully supported. Some bugs may persist even if the same ability behaves normally in combat. Check the current settings in-game rather than treating a missing tracking icon as evidence that a spell was removed.

How to update your own build without losing the comparison

  1. Record your current level, talent ranks and equipped gear before testing.
  2. Save an existing setup in the Talent Calculator, then check whether the new spell and talent names appear in the current data.
  3. Test one variable at a time against similar enemies; log damage, healing, Mana recovery and interruptions where relevant.
  4. Review your group composition if your old strategy relied on stacking Shaman totems.
  5. When sharing results in Builds, label them with the October 16 beta update. Avoid claiming the change is final for launch.

FAQ

Did every class become stronger?

No. The note includes both increases and reductions, fixes and tooltip changes. A single headline percentage does not describe overall class performance.

Does the new Druid damage number apply to every Feral spell?

No. The roughly 50% adjustment mentioned in the note applies to Wrath's base damage, not the entire class.

Can several shamans stack Windfury and Flametongue as before?

No. The October 16 notes specifically revise those stacking combinations.

Should players reset their talent builds immediately?

Review affected rows and changed skills first. Some alterations matter only to certain levels or play styles.
